Kyrgyzstan – The Nomad Yurt School
A film by Sibylle Smolka | ARTE | MDR | 2022
Many Kyrgyz families once again spend their summers just like their ancestors, high up on the pastures. They breed animals – especially horses – and live in yurts. For the children, this is a special time. They get to spend three months without school in the untouched nature of the fascinating mountain landscape and get introduced to the nomadic life. But the girls and boys have to help their parents a lot with household chores and with the animals, so their holidays are not always fun. The film depicts traditional nomadic life on the mountain pastures and accompanies 12-year-old Alihan and his father to the famous horse market in Karakol as well as the teacher Jenya as she introduces her young pupils to the modern world and Kyrgyz traditions in the yurt school.
