For centuries, Italy’s Amalfi Coast has fuelled northerners’ longing for the south like no other. At the end of 1997, UNESCO declared the picturesque cliffs a World Heritage Site, thus placing an entire landscape under its protection. But what distinguishes the Amalfi Coast from other coastal strips? What makes it so special? And what does it mean for a landscape to be declared a heritage of all mankind? In the age of mass tourism, shouldn’t it have to be protected from mankind?
