Aachen Cathedral
A film by Grit Lederer | ARTE | WDR | 2022
A four-part series celebrating UNESCO’s 50th anniversary.
The Aachen cathedral symbolizes a new era. Consecrated in 798 as the chapel of the imperial palace, Charlemagne wanted to create an image of heaven with this church building, a heavenly space on earth. Aachen Cathedral survived several wars and fires. With its extraordinary Carolingian architecture and the largest cathedral treasury in Germany, the cathedral is, and remains, a monument to eternity. It is therefore only logical that the church building became the first German building on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978. The documentary tells of the legends and secrets of this monumental building, the care of which, as a World Heritage Site, presents a challenge.
