Krakow
by Katja Runge | mdr | arte | 2026
Krakow has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978 — the first protected city in Europe. The film follows a royal city caught between memory and the present: from the Cloth Hall on Rynek Główny to the synagogues in Kazimierz, from Wawel to the socialist planned city of Nowa Huta. How does a city that is history itself come to life?
We discover why the right of staple trade turned the Cloth Hall into a hub of Europe and what is preserved in the Wawel Treasury. The film also takes us to Kazimierz — once a vibrant Jewish quarter where over 60.000 people lived before the German occupation virtually wiped out the community.
A city that does not forget. And never stops remembering.
