Cacoa from Ivory coast
Directed by Sibylle Smolka | 2015 | ZDF | arte
Cocoa farmer Emma has been growing cocoa for 20 years now. Four years ago, she decided to become member of a cooperative that buys from her the cocoa under fair conditions. Emma is responsible for six children and 10 grandchildren, thhe youngest of which still go to school. Out of the ordinary for the cocoa-business, there is no child labor at Emma’s farm due to the great solidarity among the cooperative’s members. Every single person working for the fair trade cooperation is making a living their family can modestly live from. But still, wages like this are a big exception for cocoa-cultivation at the Ivory Coast. We meet cocoa farmer Emma during harvest season. She shows us how cocoa plants are being cultivated and precisely what production steps are necessary in order for cocoa beans to develop their typical chocolate aroma. Emma talks about how fair trade changed her life and what she wishes for her family in the years to come.
