A closed society

How the middle class protects itself

A closed society – How the middle class protects itself

Directed by Ingolf Grischneder | 2011

The middle-class is on the move. The homogenous middle of society does no longer exist. Ever since the economic miracle years of the 50s, people believed that their children and grandchildren will continue to be better off than the previous generation. But conditions have changed drastically. The fear that things could take a turn for the worse is increasing. What happens, when our situation changes dramatically and we are threatened with serious social decline? We develop strategies to cope with the problem: exclusive education for our children, secure and homogenous townhouses and surroundings for our families and the building and maintaining of a stable and diverse social network. Is the segregation of social groups both the reason and the cause for the widening gap between rich and poor? Are there alternatives to this polarization? The film tries to answer these central questions by looking at the private and personal motives of individuals as well as the wider social context.
