When inaugurated in 1926, the Radio Tower symbolized a new era: the advent of radio as a mass medium and the rise of modern Berlin. At 138 meters tall, it was one of Germany’s tallest buildings at the time, built in just two years using 400 tons of steel.
Later, the Nazis stylized it as a symbol of technological progress. During the Cold War, the Radio Tower became a landmark of West Berlin, dubbed the “Beacon of Freedom.” Many Berliners maintain an emotional connection to this tower, which has lost none of its radiance and appeal.
