If you want to travel back in time to the Middle Ages, visit Bruges. The Belgian city presents itself as an architectural jewel of brickwork. You can see imposing churches, magnificent palaces and romantic canals that lead past picturesque old merchant and patrician houses. The well-preserved and harmonious appearance was a key reason why Bruges received the coveted “World Heritage” designation. Another reason: Bruges is considered the cradle of the “Flemish Primitives”, a late medieval school of painting that revolutionized art.
