Love during the Cold War

Love during the Cold War

by Sibylle Smolka | NDR | 2024

Two hostile political systems faced each other during the Cold War. But despite the Wall, people from East and West fell in love and sought ways to live together. For some, this quest led to a shared future; for others, it led to death. Eyewitnesses recount their struggles for self-determination and the life-threatening escape attempts they undertook to avoid losing the love of their lives: Ingrid took part in a plane hijacking, Manfred dug a tunnel under the Berlin Wall, Christiane dared to apply for an exit visa, and Wera tried to reach the West via Bulgaria.
