UNESCO World Cultural Heritage – Treasures for Eternity:

Tallinn

A film by Inga Wolfram | ARTE | mdr | 2022

A four-part series celebrating UNESCO’s 50th anniversary.

The Estonian capital of Tallinn has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The UNESCO Commission honored Tallinn as an “exceptionally complete and well-preserved example of a medieval northern European trading city.” The first Estonian settlement was established in the 12th century. In the Middle Ages it gradually transformed into the city of Reval, now called Tallinn. The city walls made Tallinn, then Reval, one of the most powerful medieval fortresses in Northeast Europe. The film shows the old town and explains how it is still possible to preserve the charm of the old through monument-appropriate restoration.
